Perhaps one of the most common woes of the typical homeowner is how to maximise storage. No matter how large a home, storage space always seems to be an issue. By making optimum use of space around your home, you can put your storage issues well and truly behind you.

Make the most of high, low and hidden spaces

Storage spaces are often built into areas that are within comfortable reaching range or that are in our line of sight. But advances in storage solutions mean that other options are now available. Pull-out drawers set down low or display cupboards set up high are options for storing items that are essential but not used frequently. Spaces beneath stairwells or under beds or seating can be used creatively to maximise storage: window seats that contain storage space are another elegant solution that can be used to create storage space.

Add shelving and cupboards to large, open areas

Large walkways or rooms have visual appeal, but are often not especially functional. Incorporating attractively finished cupboards, sideboards or buffets into a hallway, kitchen or living area can be a good way of making the most of the space in a room while also adding an aesthetic focal point. These free-standing storage spaces can be topped with decorative items, or with extra storage options such as boxes, racks, or book-ends.

Use pull-out drawers and drawer organisers

The space at the back of a cupboard used to be all but wasted because it was so hard to get to. But today's storage solutions include pull-out drawers that ensure that every inch of storage space is used to its best effect. These drawers can also be used to make the most of corner cupboards. The organisational value of drawers can be further improved by using drawer dividers in areas such as kitchen cupboards and pantries, or in the bathroom; drawers can also be fitted with rubbish bins and holders for out-of-the-way storage of unsightly items.

No matter how small your home, storage needn't be a problem. By thinking creatively and by being willing to use your existing spaces, you'll be able to overcome your storage woes.
